whereit all started

well, for me, I think it was when I first came acrross this excellent site for mountain biking when I first arrived in Taiwan. It inspired me to go get a bike and start riding it all over The Island. I never got to check out the trails too much, but the roads are sometimes nothing more than asphalt pathes thu the bamboo forest. Great info and inspiration. link

Here is a site that might be good.... it's called Wayfaring. You can create maps and share them.... sounds like exactly what we need. and there are no maps for Alaska or Taiwan.

MapBuilder provides a decent visual interface for the map building process, which includes geocoding features. Also MapBuilder lets users tag locations on their maps, and then publish the map either on MapBuilder.net or their own website."

The Cycling Dude: Maps for Cyclists in Missouri: "The Missouri Department of Transportation is developing its first maps specifically for bicyclists wishing to travel throughout the state using pedal power.

The maps, now in their first drafts, show the approximate traffic volume for state roads and mark roads that have paved shoulders. MoDOT is accepting public comment on the proposed maps.

The maps are designed to help cyclists plan routes between towns or across the state, said Caryn Giarratano, coordinator of the pedestrian and cyclist program for MoDOT. Most states have similar maps, and Missouri’s maps have been in development since 2002, Giarratano said."
